A quick reaction by Ezakheni police and Ladysmith Dog Unit (K9) officers resulted in a man being arrested for being in possession of an assault rifle.
The officers were acting on information they had received after locating the man walking in the Umhlumayo area just after midnight on Wednesday.
When the officers pounced on him, he had the firearm wrapped in a plastic bag.
The firearm was loaded with five rounds of ammunition.
The 20-year-old suspect faces charges of being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He appeared briefly in the Ezakheni Magistrate’s Court last week, where the case was remanded to November 11.
