WE recently received a complaint about the terrible state of Vryheid Cemetery.

It was reported that the weeds were long and overgrown and that the cemetery allegedly looked untidy. In our frequent visits to the cemetery and investigation into the matter, we noted that there were only two brushcutters being used between the six workers on site at the cemetery. Although workers refused to speak to the Vryheid Herald, we also noticed that the other equipment was in desperate need of repair, such as blunt picks with broken handles and two lawnmowers which have been in for repairs for over a year already.

Although there were areas which needed some attention in the cemetery, the workers seemed to be doing a relatively good job, despite not having the necessary equipment to maintain such a large area. Understandably, one can only do so much…

Bhekuzulu Cemetery is not without its own problems as well, as the Vryheid team is responsible for the maintenance thereof, allegedly having to use the same two brushcutters for that site. The road to the cemetery is in desperate need of repair and it seems that a grader will have to be brought in to do the job. Illegal dumping has also left the Bhekuzulu Cemetery in a terrible state. The same seems set to happen to Vryheid Cemetery, with the road leading up to the entrance of the cemetery as well as the park near the entrance in Spoor Street becoming a dumping ground for those with no respect for the environment.

We contacted the Manager of Parks and Recreation, but she was unfortunately unable to provide any comment to the media.
