This is what police have to say about the shoot-out in Greytown yesterday that left seven suspects dead…
Yesterday, just after 11am at Seven Oaks in Greytown, officers attached to the Special Task Force, Crime Intelligence, K9 Unit, Pietermaritzburg Highway Patrol and Pietermaritzburg DPCI (Hawks) were following up on information about a group of armed males who were involved in a robbery earlier that morning in Newcastle.
The officers spotted four suspicious-looking vehicles fitting the description of those being driven by the suspects involved in the robbery. Upon attempting to stop them, the suspects started shooting at police, who retaliated, fatally wounding five suspects.
One suspect is in critical condition and two others sustained gunshot wounds to the legs. They were taken to hospital under police guard. Three AK-47 rifles and two pistols were recovered from the suspects.
Two vehicles, a Hyundai Elantra and a Toyota Sprinter, were recovered at the scene. Another vehicle was found abandoned in the Pinetown area.
A manhunt has since been launched for the remaining suspects, who fled in a fourth vehicle.
Investigations are ongoing.
