Heavy down pour leaves locals injured

Monday evening, December 7 reports and calls for assistance streamed in at the KwaZulu Natal Department of Health’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) following the heavy downpour in the Tugela Ferry area.

The heavy rains, which residents initially welcomed, soon left homes collapsing and locals injured just after 4pm yesterday afternoon.

On scene paramedics confirmed some houses had been flooded while others collapsed.EMS had difficulty accessing the affected areas as the roads were flooded.

At the time of the downpour, paramedics on scene were unable to determine how many dwellings were affected by the storm; due to darkness and the inclement weather.

11 patients from various households were treated, which included a woman who was in a critical condition after a roof collapsed on her.

Four children were among the remaining patients who had sustained minor injuries.

In a separate incident in Roosboom, four children were injured after a mud house collapsed.

One child sustained serious injuries while the others had sustained minor injuries.

The disaster management team is hard at work assessing the damage caused by the flash storm, with Emergency Medical Services remaining on high alert.
