Man found with unlicensed firearm in CBD

He faces charges of being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and unlicensed ammunition

Acting on a tip-off, police arrested a 23-year-old man in the CBD on Wednesday.

The man was seated in a vehicle that was parked in Alexander Street. The occupant of the vehicle was found to be in possession of an unlicensed pistol and nine rounds of ammunition. The firearm will be sent for ballistic testing to establish whether it has been used to commit any crimes in the country.

Police are also trying to establish the identity of the owner of the firearm.

The suspect appeared briefly in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

He faces charges of being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and unlicensed ammunition. He appeared again in court on Monday for a bail hearing.
