Elderly man shot by armed robbers

Fearing for their lives, the couple locked themselves in their bedroom

An elderly man was shot in his house in Shepstone Road by armed robbers in the early hours of this morning.

The 57-year-old man and his wife were awoken at about 1.30am by a loud noise coming from the back door entrance. The man went to investigate and was met by two unknown men inside the house.

Fearing for his life, the homeowner managed to get back inside his bedroom and lock the door.

The couple were then shocked to hear the intruders banging on the bedroom door and trying to break it down. It is believed that the suspects used an axe in an attempt to break down the bedroom door.

As the door was being systematically smashed open, terrified for their lives, the couple armed themselves with a firearm. When the door was bashed open, the robbers opened fire, hitting the elderly man in the leg and the hip.

The homeowner returned fire and the suspects fled the scene.

NN Alarms and K9 Unit officers responded. Officers searched the area, but the suspects were nowhere to be found.

The injured man was stabilised and transported to La Verna Hospital by EMS paramedics.
