Within hours after yesterday’s business robbery in Madras Road, police arrested 6 men.
Initial reports indicated that three men held up a prominent businessman, a driver and a security guard at gunpoint. The elderly businessman was viciously pistol-whipped. He and the other two robbery victims were all assaulted and beaten to the ground. They were then tied up.
The thugs ransacked the business and fled on foot.
A case of business robbery and assault was registered at Ladysmith SAPS.
Further investigation revealed that an additional three suspects were also involved in the robbery. Police immediately launched a manhunt for the six men.
K9 Unit and Uthukela Cluster Task Team officers worked tirelessly as they followed up on information concerning the whereabouts of the suspects. At 2pm, police made a breakthrough and all six suspects, aged between 26 and 40, were arrested in the Acaciavale area.
Two unlicensed pistols and a pistol belonging to the complainant were seized. Ammunition and a small amount of cash was also recovered.
The suspects are set to appear in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court early next week. They face charges of business robbery, assault, possession of unlicensed firearms, and possession of unlicensed ammunition.
