CRIME: Woman gang raped, assaulted and left to die
After being assaulted and gang raped by three men, the victim managed to crawl to her neighbour's home for help.
Three suspects appeared before the Madadeni Magistrate’s Court yesterday, facing charges of burglary, attempted murder and rape.
On January 9, Madadeni police received word of a 24-year-old woman who had been gang raped in Section L.
“The victim was seriously assaulted and left to die before the suspects fled the scene,” said SAPS spokesperson, Major Thulani Zwane. “She managed to crawl to neighbours where she was assisted and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.”
A case was later opened, prompting the Madadeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit to commence a full-scale investigation.
According to Maj Zwane, the unit used their skills and technology to track the suspects, aged between 19 and 22, down.
“Two days later, the members managed to trace the suspects and were arrested in a bus between Nongoma and Vryheid road. All three of them were charged with burglary, attempted murder and rape,” he explained.
Following their first appearance in court, the case was remanded to January 15, pending further investigation.
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, strongly condemned the ‘horrific’ actions of the suspects.
“This is unacceptable in our society and we will work around the clock to make sure that people like these are brought to book and face the long arm of the law,” she concluded.
