Newcastle to have its own Goshala
A Goshala will be opening in Newcastle, and the community is invited to be a part of the joyous occasion.
In the search of spirituality, Shanti Nivas is making headway in ensuring Hindu devotees are able to fully embrace their beliefs.
On Sunday, January 17, Shanti Nivas will be opening a Goshala.
When translated from Sanskrit to English, the word Goshala means shelter for cows.
“Cows are sacred in our culture and are symbolic in worship. Shanti Nivas is now offering people the opportunity to perform the necessary prayers. Furthermore, according to Hindu custom, when someone is about to pass away, people need to offer prayers and do worship to the cows, as we believe they play a role in the afterlife,” explained Guru Sarverson Naidoo from Shanti Nivas.
With the Goshala being the first such place of worship in Northern KwaZulu-Natal, Guru Sarverson felt it would play an instrumental part in people’s religious lives.
“With it being placed in a farm setting, it will offer people the chance to get in touch with their spiritual lives and find themselves again.”
“At the moment we have two cows, Mustafa and Gangadevi, but we are hoping to get more during the course of the week. We will also welcome people who want to donate cows and we will care for them,” added Guru Surverson.
The Goshala is situated on the N11 at Phaphama Workshop Roy Point.
The official opening of the Goshala will take place on Sunday, January 17, at 9am.
