Update: Taxi owner gunned down in Colenso

It is suspected that there may have been about three gunmen who fled the scene by vehicle

At about 7.15am (today), a man in his early 50s was travelling along the Colenso/Weenen Road (R74) when he stopped to speak to someone at the side of the road. A vehicle then drove past and the occupants opened fire on the two. It is suspected that there may have been about three gunmen who fled the scene by vehicle.

The man who stopped to speak to the pedestrian sustained several gunshot wounds to the body, fatally wounding him. The pedestrian (in his early 40s) sustained gunshot wounds to the arm and is in hospital.

The drive-by shooting has sent shock waves through not just the Colenso community, but those linked to the various clans in the ongoing taxi war that has plagued eZakheni.

The motive is still unclear at this stage.

Colenso police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder. The name of the deceased is known, but the pedestrian has not yet been officially identified.

Police are still searching for the suspects.
