Knives seized at school
Children found in possession of a dangerous weapon are committing a criminal offence
During the recent launch of a School Safety Committee at a high school in the Ezakheni area, police seized 15 knives.
Police then conducted an awareness campaign to educate the learners on the provisions of the Dangerous Weapons Act and what to do if there is domestic violence in the home, and parents present were asked to be more involved in checking what their children bring to school.
In the interests of ensuring that our children are safe in and around school, the following tips are given to parents or guardians of school-going children:
Parents should get together and make sure there are at least two parents on hand to accompany children as they walk to and from school. This will decrease the risk of children being accosted on the way.
Parents should educate their children on the consequences of taking a dangerous weapon to school. Children found in possession of these items are in fact committing a criminal offence which could see them being prosecuted and sentenced. Once they have a criminal record, their employment opportunities are compromised for life.
Parents should be more involved in what their children are up to. Often teachers notice a problem developing before parents do.
The safety of children at schools involves everyone – teachers, learners, parents and police. Together, we can make our schools a safe place that is conducive to learning.
