About 300 people gathered at the Estcourt Town Hall on Friday for the launch of the first of its kind project, which will assist locals with drivers’ and learners’ licenses.

This is an initiative of Umtshezi Municipality Mayor Bongani Dlamini to help families that are poor. Mr Dlamini said all nine wards were represented without any political affiliation and expressed unhappiness that there are people who are delaying this project.

He said the intention of councillors is to help another 300 people before the merger of Imbabazane and Umtshezi municipalities.
Mr Dlamini added that people leave home, shifting responsibilities to others, but if they are given opportunities, they may find suitable work.

He cautioned the youth against ‘sugar daddies’ and ‘sugar mommies’ and encouraged them not to be led into temptation by peer pressure.
Those who qualified for assistance with their licenses were advised that they should report for classes on time and should they decide to discontinue, to inform the municipality, so that new candidates can be registered.

The program is expected to commence within the next two weeks.
