Faulty street lights leave residents in the dark

Residents have recently complained about street lights in Newcastle, on social media.

Apparently, some some street lights are not working at night, compromising residents’ safety.

“Most nights our street lights are off, leaving us in complete darkness. This is dangerous as it creates opportunities for burglars. We have reported this problem to the municipality numerous times, but it often falls on deaf ears,” claimed a resident.

On the other hand, some lights are allegedly switched on during the day.

Strategic Executive Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services, Lindile Zincume, said, his department was aware of the complaints. He undertook all problems regarding street lights would receive immediate attention when reported.

“A number of street lights have been installed and replaced around Newcastle, and more will be installed around Newcastle, Madadeni, oSizweni and Kilbarchan,” Mr Zincume concluded.
