Dumping illegally could cost residents big time.
The Community Services’ Waste Department stated it will enforce fines, as illegal dumping was costing the Newcastle Municipality greatly.
This was according to Thava Kelly, Superintendent of Waste.
Mrs Kelly commented on an inquiry sent last week, highlighting two instances of rubble dumping, at the crossing of Percy Riley and Doogan Streets, and the intersection of Percy Riley and Paddock Drive.
The department also dispatched investigators to address the matter.
Municipal employee, Jacob Hadebe said although the contractor responsible for the dumping could not be located, he confirmed the homeowner would be approached to resolve the matter.
“The owner used the municipal services initially, but there is only two wheelbarrows’ worth left.”
Mrs Kelly stated there were bylaws in this regard, which were being promulgated, and no dumping of waste in any area of Newcastle was allowed, unless it was a permitted site.
Residents are welcome to hire a skip to remove rubble, which is a special collection.
Mrs Kelly said residents were also permitted to transport any building rubble to the landfill site near the airport, at no cost.
“There will be a fine imposition for those who dump. The municipality is spending a huge amount of funds to remove illegal dumping, which will impact on the tariff of charges.”
