37 unlicensed firearms and 207 live rounds of ammunition were confiscated
Police clamped down on unlicensed firearms throughtout KwaZulu-Natal in a week-long operation to clean up our streets.
Various Clusters within KZN – inclusive of Uthukela, Ethekwini Inner North, Ethekwini Inner South, Ilembe, Umzinyathi, Uthungulu and other clusters – embarked on the operation to confiscate unlicensed firearms.
The operation, which started on February 7 and ended on Saturday (February 13), yielded fruitful results when 37 unlicensed firearms and 207 live rounds of ammunition were confiscated.
A total of 37 suspects were arrested and charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
They appeared in the various magistrate’s court across the province.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, praised the officers for the recovery of the firearms.
“Although many firearms have been recovered from the hands of criminals over the past few months, it still remains a concern that criminals are using firearms to commit crime. We will ensure that all those possessing unlicensed firearms are brought to book,” she said.
