The Newcastle Carnegie Art Gallery, together with Museum Services, hosted a Tourism School Passport competition awards on Wednesday, February 24.
The event took place at the Newcastle Town Hall, where children from different schools in the Amajuba District received prizes.
Carnegie Arts Gallery Curator, Phumzile Dlamini, said the purpose of the competition was for children to be more engaged with their heritage and for them to be better equipped with the knowledge and history around Newcastle.
“Our children need to know where they come from and what great stories our hometown carries,” she said.
Altogether 20 schools participated. They had to visit places in and around town and then report back to their teachers about what they had learned.
Also attending the event, was Chief Education Officer, Nelly Thwala and Acting SED, Tisha Mhlanga, who welcomed the event and handed over the rewards.
