Ladysmith police are appealing to the community to take note of a scam that was carried out in the CBD on Wednesday.
A 59-year-old woman had just been to the bank when an unknown man came up to her and touched her. He immediately left.
A woman then came up to the scam victim, claiming that the man had rubbed muti on her. She further said that she had also been a victim of this muti and had lost all her money.
A second woman then joined the first and convinced the complainant that she had to put her money in an envelope so it could be protected from the muti. The complainant did so and was told to go to the public toilets and wash the muti off.
She was handed an envelope in which she assumed her money had been placed. When she returned, both women had disappeared and when she checked inside the envelope, it was filled with pieces of paper.
The women had swapped the envelopes and made off with the money.
The community is advised that while in the bank and upon exiting it, they should be wary of anyone showing interest in their actions or following them outside. The public should also be wary of strangers approaching them on the street.
If you are ever approached by someone who claims you have been touched by muti, don’t believe them, since it is part of the scam.
Immediately draw attention to yourself and move to a safe area where you can call police. Do not follow them to an isolated area and do not hand over your money to them, since they do not intend to keep your money safe, they intend to steal it.
