Luyanda Ngwenya, 18-jarige leerling van Hoërskool Volksrust, is ‘n semi-finalis vir Miss Teen Commonwealth 2016.
Op 30 April vanjaar neem sy deel aan ‘n uitdunningsrondte vir die finaal wat gedurende Julie sal plaasvind. Sy is tans besig om haar nasionale model-opleiding te ontvang by Image Models.
Zahnie Harris, eienaar van Image Models, het al die kwaliteite in haar raakgesien en voorspel dat Luyanda oor die talent en doelgerigtheid beskik om aan hierdie kompetisie deel te neem.
“Sy is intelligent, beskik oor ‘n suiwer wisselende verbale vermoë, algemene kennis van alle lewensfassette en vertoon absoluut elegant op die loopplank. Sy is ‘n borrelende tiener met ‘n baie sterk visie vir haar persoonlike lewe. Sy het ‘n passie wat sy wil uitleef en ons as gemeenskap is daar om haar vlerke te gee om te kan vlieg,” het Zahnie gesê.
Haar opleiding deur Image Models strek oor twee maande en behels vier klasse per week. Volgens Zahnie het Luyanda die potensiaal om die nasionale titel huis toe te bring. Om suksesvol te kan wees, speel harde werk, toegewydheid en ure se oefening agter geslote deure ‘n groot rol.
“Dit is hier waar sweet, trane en herhaling plaasvind. Dit is hier waar karakter gevorm word. Na alles, sien die publiek ‘n afgeronde model raak, wat mense laat snak na hulle asem,” sê Zahnie.

Q: What charity did you choose to support in your community?
A: I chose Volksrust Cares better known as VK cares as my charity organisation. It was launched on the June 16, 2015 and it focuses on supplying child – headed families with basic needs such as food parcels and clothing. I have also initiated my project with VK Cares in supplying sanitary towels to young girls from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Q: What is the most difficult stage in being a teenager today?
A: The most difficult stage is the high school phase whereby most youngsters are in their teen years. I regard that stage as a make or break stage because it is a time where teenagers face the dangers of social exposure and peer pressure.
Q: How do you handle a crisis?
A: I first admit and accept that there is a crisis, then I speak to someone I trust about the problem. We then figure out possible solutions and implement those solutions and hope for positive results.
Q: Being a Grade 12 pupil, what will the most challenging period be in your final school year?
The challenging period in Grade 12 would be exam time, both mid-year and final exam because they are the yardstick to measure your performance in the first six months, and the final exams measure how you have performed the entire year.
Q: If you can choose between happiness or buying an expensive new car, which one will you choose?
A: I would definitely choose happiness because happiness is a feeling of contentment and being satisfied with who you are and what you have. As the saying goes: “The world is your oyster.”
