Amajuba District stakeholders met at Grey Goose Game Lodge to discuss the water and sanitation draft on Wednesday, March 2.
Minister of Water and Sanitation, Nomvula Mokonyane, introduced the Draft National Sanitation Policy 2016 for the purpose of comment and consultation with interested and affected parties. The policy proposes equal access to clean water and service delivery to all.
The Department of Water and Sanitation held two other meetings in Pietermaritzburg and Richard Bay where stakeholders discussed numerous problems regarding the sanitation policy, which was drawn in 1994, and possible amendments thereto.
Members of the department thought better education in rural and poverty-stricken communities should be prioritised to minimise water pollution and water-borne diseases. Problems caused by the lack of access to sanitised water in peri-urban households, including backyard dwellers, were also discussed.
