The Hardwick Street cemetery has been dubbed a disappointment.
In a trip to Newcastle last week, to visit an interred relative, former residents were not complementary of the state of the burial grounds.
This, they said, was in stark contrast to the developments across town.
“My father worked at Iscor for many years and contributed to the town’s economy. I visited Newcastle again and was so impressed with the changes going in, for example the casino (Blackrock) and the new mall (Newcastle Mall).”
The family continue to visit Newcastle regularly, to pay respects to their relative.
Instead, they were irked by the lack of fencing, uncut grass and rubbish reportedly strewn about the cemetery, in sight of municipal workers.
“Why can’t this facility be kept clean and safe for families to visit their loved ones?”
The matter was brought to the attention of the Community Services department by numerous complainants, the most recent on Tuesday afternoon.
In response, department officials promised the matters would be attended to by Wednesday.
