
Four suspects who were arrested for possession of drugs and unlicensed firearms appeared in court on Friday.
On Thursday, the Ladysmith Tactical Response Team (TRT) were working in the Ezakheni area when they received information about an unlicensed firearm. They proceeded to the Pieters area, where they arrested a 26-year-old suspect and seized an unlicensed .303 rifle and ammunition.
As police stopped to investigate, the man ran off. He was quickly caught and in his possession police found a straw of whoonga and a quarter mandrax tablet. The 25-year-old was arrested for possession of drugs. The estimated street value of the drugs is around R50.
Police were busy in the Ematsheni area as well and a woman was arrested for possession of dagga.
Also on Thursday, Ematsheni police followed up on information about a person alleged to be selling dagga to schoolchildren. Their investigation led to the Zwelisha area, where they found a 39-year-old woman who was found in possession of dagga parcels weighing about 436 grams. Police also removed over 50 dagga plants at her premises. The estimated street value of the dagga is around R1500 to R2000.
During the early hours of Friday morning, Public Order Policing (POP) officers were conducting operations in the Ezakheni area. Acting on information, they searched a house in the Mziyonke area. A 35-year-old man was arrested after it was found that he had three unlicensed firearms in his possession. Police unearthed an AK-47 assault rifle and a .22 firearm. More searching resulted in the recovery of a pistol. No ammunition was found.
All three firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing to see if they were used in any crimes in the country.
The suspect appeared in the Ezakheni Magistrate’s Court on charges of being in possession of unlicensed firearms.
