Residents recently took to social media to bring to light litter problems at the Farmers Hall.
Social media has become a ‘go to’ resource for Newcastillians to raise their concerns about issues in and around town. According to some, it seems the Farmers Hall has become a dumping ground lately, with papers, bottles and other waste discarded there.
“The extent of the litter at the Farmers Hall is absolutely disgusting! As ratepayers we should demand basic dignity of not having to expose ourselves to such filth! This is bad for the psyche…it depresses us!” exclaimed a concerned resident.
Community Services Waste Manager, Thava Kelly responded to the complaints and said: “The department was inundated with calls regarding litter at the Farmers Hall. We have raised the matter with the Halls section. We have also noticed that every time there is an event at the Farmers Hall, there are traces of litter surrounding the area.”
Mrs Kelly added the department sought the help of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) workers to clean the area as often as possible.
“Hopefully, we will clean at least once a week,” she concluded.
