Hidden from view of passersby, the Ncandu River runs peacefully past Finnemore Street, Paradise.
Over the past few months, reeds and grass have grown into a verdant wall, obscuring the river.
As the area is a flood zone, one may ask why the shrubbery allowed to grow out of control.
Acting Councillor for Ward 4, Bertie Meiring, said the overgrown shrubbery also posed a safety risk, as it could conceal potential burglars.
“I have taken it up with Community Services and explained to them how it posed a threat. I was told it would be resolved within the next week; if it isn’t I will be taking it further,” he undertook.
On February 11, the Newcastle Sun asked the municipality’s communications department to determine when and how the matter would be addressed.
Despite contacting the department regularly, no feedback has been received.
