A recently repaired section of the R34 has already begun to crumble.
The portion of the street, near the Allen Street intersection, was dug out and retarred earlier this year, following complaints from motorists.
Now that same stretch is facing the same fate.
In general, Allen Street appears to be in a state of steady decline, with a deep rut near the Scott Street crossing and new holes opening near the Paterson Street intersection.
This is dire news for one of the arterial roads of Newcastle.
During his State of the Town address, Mayor, Afzul Rehman said major capital expenditure of the last few years had been R2-billion towards new roads and bridges.
This financial year, R89-million was budgeted for roads and sidewalks.
However, there has been no mention of what amount was set aside for maintenance of roads, whose bad state has been in the headlines much of 2016.
And media inquiries dating as far back as June last year remain unanswered.
In recent months, terms such as ‘disaster waiting to happen’ have been used by councillors and experts in the engineering field.
The municipality has since been re-sent pending enquiries.
The official response from the Communications Department will be revealed at a later stage.
