‘Respect. That’s the way to overcome racism’ – Sipho Mbatha
Sipho believes that poor inter-community relations can damage the economy as the workplace can easily be affected by such actions.
Respect. That is the best and easiest way to overcome racism. So says local attorney, Sipho Mbatha. “People should just act normally… if everyone respects each other, how can there be racism and/or discrimination? Sadly, there are incidents of racism. It is a bad thing. Sipho believes that poor inter-community relations can damage the economy as the workplace can easily be affected by such actions.
“Suspicion, ill-treatment, discrimination – these can make employees negative.” He believes that the younger generation has a great opportunity to change South African society.
“They mix together at schools where fear and mistrust are broken down. Real friendships are made. Schools can do even more to promote good inter-racial relationships by conducting school debates – perhaps one debate at a township school – where all schools will be invited – and the next round at a town school. That will be an important way to break down that them-and-us scenario.”
Sipho would like to see Heritage Day, September 24, being used to promote ‘cultural lessons’ for communities. Sport is also an important way of breaking down barriers and Sipho is positive, despite the recent racial incidents that have rocked South Africa, that with the young generation taking the lead, the country will over come this haunting spectre.
“The country’s flag is made up of many colours – just like society. Let’s unite, show respect and be real citizens of the country.”
