Police in the province of KwaZulu-Natal have been working around the clock, tracing suspects involved in any crimes in the province under the umbrella of ‘Operation Paseka’.
During operations which started on March 26 and ended on April 2, a total of 380 suspects were arrested for various crimes such as murder, assault, selling of liquor without a licence, sexual assault, shoplifting, illegal railway crossing, drinking in public, carjacking and other crimes.
81 suspects were arrested for possession of dagga, while a further 81 were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicating substance.
Police also recovered three cell-phones, three motor vehicles, a DVD player, CDs, 15 live rounds of ammunition, 10 knives, an unlicensed firearm, a magazine and other recoveries.
A large quantity of drugs, as well as liquor, was also seized by police.
These operations will continue across the KwaZulu-Natal province.
The suspects appeared in various magistrate’s courts across the province.
“The abuse of alcohol has the potential to lead to more crimes being committed. We will be out in full force and we will not tolerate any criminality committed in our province,” said KZN Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
