Police are on the hunt for the suspects involved in the American Swiss break-ins.
The jewellery store situated in Harding Street was broken into on Sunday, March 27 and Monday, March 28. The store was targeted and robbed on both days during the early parts of the morning. At this point it is not clear whether the same suspects returned to rob the store on Monday morning. The matter is under investigation, and no arrests have been made as yet. An unknown number of suspects fled with items such as a DVD player, cash and cell phones, some of which were later recovered outside.
“The break-in triggered an alarm and when two security personnel arrived to investigate, the suspects shot and injured the them.
“The suspects then fled in a white VW Golf,” said police spokesperson Captain Charmaine Struwig.
It’s been said that the suspects followed the guards to the security company’s’ control room in an attempt to kill them. Later on Monday morning upper Harding Street was cordoned off.
During the shootout between the Enviro-Watch security guards and the gunmen, which broke out on Monday morning, bullets were fired at the Truworths and the Medical Hall Pharmacy buildings, which are adjacent from the store.
“One guard is recovering and has been discharged from hospital while the other is still receiving medical treatment for his finger, which was grazed by a bullet,” said Enviro-Watch spokesperson Mac Mkhwanazi. Cases of housebreak-in, theft and attempted murder were registered with the Estcourt police and is currently being investigated.
