A motorist’s worst nightmare; leaving the store only to realise their most prized possession is gone.
Several incidents of vehicle thefts and remote jamming have been reported via social media over the last few weeks.
While the cases appear to be isolated, a specific shopping centre seems to have become a proverbial hot spot for criminal activity.
In a recent remote jamming incident, a resident’s personal belongings were stolen from her vehicle in broad daylight at a local mall.
“On numerous occasions, various people’s cars don’t lock and items get stolen; even vehicles are being stolen lately. The security needs to be improved drastically and very soon,” she explained.
Since the beginning of 2016, two cases of vehicle thefts have been reported at a local centre. However, allegations from residents suggest the figures are far higher.
According the Corporate Communications Department of Newcastle SAPS, Madza 323s are being targeted across the board.
In its efforts to curb vehicle-related crimes, the Department suggested patrols, visible policing and stop-and search operations be conducted at shopping centres.
“Park your vehicle in a well-lit area, preferably in an attended lot. Don’t make your car an easy target for thieves.”
Newcastle SAPS advised motorists to following the precautions below to avoid falling victim to vehicle thefts:
– Always lock your vehicle and take your keys with you.
– Don’t leave a spare key in your vehicle; thieves know where to look.
– Don’t leave any packages or valuables in plain site. Always lock them in the boot or cover them so they are not visible.
– Approach your car with keys in hand and check the back seat of your car. If you see suspicious activity or someone loitering near your car, don’t approach it. If possible, notify the police.
– Be mindful of people who approach your vehicle to ask for directions or change, or to hand out flyers.
– Carry a cellphone and know your emergency numbers (10111).
In lieu of the recent spike in vehicle thefts, residents are encouraged to follow the precautions, and report incidents to the police immediately.
