A spree of vehicle break-ins has led SAPS to increase its presence in the suburbs.
Members have begun blue light patrols and stop-and-search operations in Hutten Heights, in response to confirmed cases of thefts out of motor vehicles.
Officials said two cases had been reported recently.
Lizzy Arumugam of SAPS Corporate Communication, provided the following advice for motorists to safeguard their vehicles and possessions:
- Always lock your car and take the keys with you.
- Check if the car is locked, and never leave the vehicle unlocked.
- Do not leave a spare key inside the vehicle, as thieves know all the hiding spots.
- Park your vehicle in a well-lit area, preferably in an attended lot. Don’t make your vehicle an easy target for criminals.
- Don’t leave any packages or valuables inside the vehicle, and in plain view.
- Always approach your vehicle with keys in-hand, and check the back seat before climbing in. If you see anything suspicious or someone loitering near the car, do not approach and notify SAPS immediately.
- Be mindful of people approaching your vehicle and asking for change or directions, or to hand you a flyer – they may not be who they claim to be.
- Carry a cellphone and know the emergency number: 10111.
