The three school boys who were injured when they were hit by an out of control vehicle on Tuesday afternoon are recovering well.

Two of the boys (all Ethangeni School children) were transferred to Madadeni Hospital suffering leg fractures.  However, they are said to be doing well and the 11-year-old and 17-year-old are expected to be soon released.

The third boy, who was treated at Dundee Hospital, has since been released.  The driver of the vehicle, who works in Newcastle, said he was ‘very thankful that the boys were recovering’.

“I have spoke to the parents of two of the boys at the Dundee Hospital.  I feel so terrible.  I was returning from Vryheid and upon entering Dundee – adjacent to Dundee Secondary School – I blacked out and cannot remember.  I am a diabetic and think my blood sugar must have shot up.  It is a terrible ordeal,” the driver said over the telephone,  breaking down in tears.

Police took syringes and medicines from the car and the driver’s blood has been taken for sampling.  A breathlyser test at the scene proved negative.
