Livestock roaming in Lennoxton has a resident up in arms.
Living in Draper Street since 1965, Arthi Singh claimed her garden was being destroyed by cattle, goats and even the occasional horse for the past three years.
“Not one week goes by when animals don’t come into my yard, eat plants and make a mess,” she said. “The owners should contain them and not allowing them to destroy other people’s gardens.”
She has no idea where the cattle come from, but insists something needs to be done.
“They come at all hours of the day. Not to long ago, at about midnight, I heard a tapping on one of the windows of my house. Worried it might be a criminal, I contacted the security company who looks after my place. When they got to my house, 30 cows were discovered in my yard and it was them I heard tapping on my window.”
Siya Zuma, from Community Services Chief Environmental Health, said residents should report stray livestock to the municipal pound, regardless of the time.
“The animal pound is operating on a 24-hour basis. All complaints relating to straying livestock should be reported to the municipal pound on either 072 225 8665 or 076 393 4416,” he advised.
He explained the municipality was in the process of regulating the keeping of livestock in residential areas, through the promulgation of by-laws.
“The process is at an advanced stage. Straying animals in open spaces, municipal land and private land are impounded in terms of the KwaZulu-Natal Pound Act No 3 of 2006. Animals impounded are only released on payment of the applicable pound fees,” he concluded.
