Dundee’s historic Scottish links have been strengthened thanks to three local ladies who have contributed to an embroidered tapestry that will travel the world to celebrate the Scottish diaspora.
Rosheni Bedassi, Lyn Buitendag and Marie Mordue were last week presented with framed posters at Talana Musem to thank them for contributing to the tapestry by embroidering panels that reflect Dundee’s own Scottish roots.
This project, started by the Prestonpans Art Festival, Scotland, in 2012, has brought together stories from communities, documenting their Scottish connections in 305 embroidered panels.
It is a remarkable and heart-felt homage to the determination, courage and achievement of Scottish migrants and their descendants across the centuries.

Pam McFadden of Talana Museum, who oversaw the Dundee project and motivated the town’s contribution, wrote the history and created the concept of the design, which was then finalised in Scotland.
“The panels, with the design drawn on it was sent back to us to be embroidered.
“All the panels were the same size linen panel and all groups were supplied with the embroidery wools and requests to only use the wools and colours supplied and to include certain specific stitches, to give the final project a degree of uniformity.
“One of the major concerns by the organisers was that the historical information had to be historically correct.”
Once all the panels have been joined together the tapestry will be over 100 metres in length.
A version of the tapestry was exhibited across Scotland in 2014. The tapestry began a global tour in May 2015 in Bergen, Norway. In June it was exhibited in the Netherlands, Italy and in Paris.
November 2015 was the first time that all 305 panels were shown together. So far this year the tapestry has toured across Australia and New Zealand and will be going to Canada and return to London and Edinburgh in 2017.
