Hijacker sentenced to 15 years

The victim was en route to Utrecht when the accused pepper sprayed him in the face, and instructed him to get out of the vehicle.

Thokozani Zwane will spend more than a decade in prison, thanks to a ruling by a local court.

This follows an incident that occurred in 2013, where Zwane hijacked a vehicle from a meter taxi driver.

The victim was en route to Utrecht when the accused pepper sprayed him in the face, and instructed him to get out of the vehicle.

Zwane sped off in a Mazda Sting valued at about R27 000.

Two days later, he was arrested in Vryheid, still in possession of the stolen vehicle.

Earlier this month, the Newcastle Regional Magistrate’s Court convicted and sentenced Zwane to 15 years’ imprisonment, and declared him unfit to possess a firearm.

Senior police officials later commended the investigating officer for his dedication and hard work in ensuring justice was served.
