Yesterday (Wednesday), police officers from Ladysmith, Glencoe and Newcastle Stock Theft Units worked together to crack open cases involving a group of people responsible for the theft of sheep and the subsequent slaughtering of the animals for meat.
The group of police officers were following up on information which led them to a house in Durnacol, where they discovered the carcasses of six stolen sheep. Meat products from eight stolen sheep were also discovered on the property.
Later the same day, nine sheep skins were also recovered in Newcastle.
Three people were arrested during the police operation.
The remains of the sheep have thus far been linked to two cases in Elandslaagte.
On April 19, 69 sheep were stolen, while 48 of the sheep were recovered after they were found on a neighbouring farm. 21 of the sheep were missing.
The same farm was targeted again on Tuesday, where another 18 sheep were stolen.
The three suspects – aged 28, 44 and 49 – are set to appear in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court today on charges of housebreaking and theft of stock.
Police are also looking into the possibility that the suspects may have been targeting other farms in the Elandslaagte, Dannhauser and Normandien area. Further arrests in these cases may follow.
