Tour Report By Deen Cassim:
Day 1 I woke up excited at 4am to start packing my suitcase; I was so eager to see what Babanango looked like.
We left a bit late because of Mr Khumalo. Then we arrived at Babanango where Russell came and accompanied us the whole way. We got a friend each that we could name ourselves. Before that, we went to the Blood River Monument. We then did a blind-helps-blind challenge where we went through the forest blindly. It was fun but many ‘friends’ were dropped (egg). Supper was oxtail soup and roast chicken. We then had a court case and Asanda was sentenced to life. We also did a lifting challenge.
Day 2 was better because I could see the whole day. Breakfast was bacon and eggs or porridge. After breakfast, we did an arachnid study where the yellow team was the team to beat. We found so many black scorpions and baboon spiders. We even found a rare tailless-whip scorpion. We then went to the river where we did a river study on the cleanliness of the water and how many insects were around us. We went back to play stalk the lantern. Aiden beat us all. We then had supper afterwards.
Day 3 we were all excited, well at least I was. I was glad because I could take a proper shower at home. We had the exact same breakfast as yesterday. Then we went out to the river again and we had to do a raft challenge where we had to build one. Keagan gave us about 25 minutes to do it. We decided to make ours out of reeds and sticks. This river was called the Ntembeni River. We got a 3/10 for our raft. We then went home at 11:30. Goodbye Babanango.
Tour Report by Robin van Heerden:
Day 1. On May 3 the grade 6 class set off for their class tour. We were all so excited. When we arrived at the Blood River Monument, we sat down in a room and watched a movie about how the Blood River got its name. After that we got on the bus and left for Babanango Valley. At Babanango we all put our bags in our tents and sat around the fire circle. Russell gave us all an egg and a bag of 30 beans. We had to give our egg a name and personality.
If our egg broke Mr K or one of the facilitators would pick up the egg up and rub it in our hair. Asanda was the first person whose egg cracked. Keagan and Corne took the red and green group, Russell and Linda took the blue and yellow group.
We went into the veld and did some activities. After a shower we had supper and then went to Mrs Van Staden’s room to have a court case.
Day 2. We got up at 6:50am in the morning and got ready for a long day. We had breakfast, brushed our teeth and set off.
The first thing we did was an Arachnid Study, Russell taught us about spiders. We went off into the veld to do a river study and at the end of the activity, we had a mud and egg fight with Russell and Linda. We went back to the camp, had a shower, put dark clothes on and went and played stalk the lantern – Aidan won.
Day 3. We had breakfast and set off to do an activity at the river. Then we jumped on the bus and left for home. On the bus, we had a toothpaste fight. Grade 6 tour was the best!
