Security guard falls asleep and loses firearm at work
The suspect is known but has not appeared in court.
A security guard had his firearm stolen while he was posted at Talana Museum to perform his duties on May 28.
According to the police the guard fell asleep between 6:30pm and 8pm during which time his 9mm Morinco pistol valued at R5000, including one magazine and seven live rounds, were stolen.
When he woke up at 8pm, he found his collegue from the same company in the office and when he checked his firearm, it was no longer where he kept it. His colleague denied seeing the firearm. A theft of a firearm case was opened, as well as a case of negligent loss of firearm, against the security guard. The case is under investigation. The suspect is known but has not appeared in court.
Captain Mbense appealed to the community to report anyone seen with an unlicensed firearm to the police. “A person can be reported if he or she is found in possession of ammunition or magazines, ” said Captain Mbense, “no one is allowed to be in possession of a firearm, ammunition or a magazine without a license.”
