Update: Mother talks about the night her children’s throats were slit
The family is devastated by this tragedy and hope to one day find answers that give them some peace
In an exclusive interview with the Ladysmith Gazette, a still traumatised mother spoke of how her two children, four-year-old Bongukwenza Mdladla and six-year-old Sithandiwe Mdladla, had their throats slit and stomachs ripped open by their father.
It is alleged that the father, 33-year-old Mkonzeni Bernard Mdladla, approached the house during the night. In fear, both the mother and grandmother fled the home, leaving behind the two children who were asleep.
It is unknown what happened in the house to trigger the man to cold-bloodedly slit the children’s throats and rip open their stomachs.
According to the mother of the children, Nobuhle Mbele, she heard dogs barking and told her younger brother to shut the door. As he was about to, the mother’s ex-boyfriend came inside and started acting violently towards her.
“He asked, ‘Where is Sithandiwe?'” recalls the mother. She then ran out of the house to seek help from neighbours, leaving her sleeping children in the house.
“When I got back, I found my innocent children in a pool of blood, dead. My mother came when she heard me screaming. I really don’t know what his motive was and why he did this to my angels.”
The family is devastated by this tragedy and hope that one day they will find answers to give them some peace.
The father remains in custody until June 29 for further investigation.
Ladysmith police are investigating a case of double murder.
