The Celebration Flame passed through AbaQulusi Municipality last Thursday.

The Celebration Flame is the symbol of the 16 years of local government. The flame is currently touring the 61 municipalities within the province and will be used as an anchor to showcase achievements in each district led by the MEC Champion, District Mayor and Local Mayors.

THIS year marks 16 years of democratic local government which coincides with the first anniversary of the implementation of the Back to Basics Programme. Provincial government, together with the local municipalities, are using this opportunity to reflect on the 16 year journey of democratic local government and celebrate its successes.

The objective is to showcase and communicate the achievements of democratic government over the past 16 years, to instill a sense of ownership of government services by the people, and to instill hope and confidence in people who are still awaiting services from government.

From the launch, the flame was handed to MEC Champion and Mayors of the District. It is now circulating to all municipalities visiting major government projects delivered.

In each Municipality, the arrival and exit of the celebration flame will be marked by community engagements and site visits. The engagements will carry messages about the upcoming local government elections and voter registration processes. All these celebration activities will culminate into the Municipal Excellence Awards ceremony to be held at the Durban ICC.
