Couple visit town to learn some history
Joseph Farquhar's great grandson, Alan, was fascinated by the idea of learning all about the history of his great grandfather

Alan Farquhar and his wife Di Harbour visited Ladysmith recently to learn more about their family history.
Alan Farquhar is one great grandson of Joseph Farquhar. The latter was the first mayor of Ladysmith, elected in 1899-1900.
He was born in 1854 in Scotland and emigrated to South Africa in 1880. Joseph, along with his brothers (who died some years before the Boer War), engaged in building operations and built the first Market Hall.
Joseph was invested CMG by the Duke of York and later King George V in 1901 for outstanding services as president of the Town Guard. Joseph’s family are now mainly resident in Zimbabwe, where they have resided since 1923.
His great grandson, Alan, was fascinated by the idea of learning all about the history of his great grandfather. Alan lives in Plettenberg Bay, while another line of the family resides in Johannesburg.
Proud of their family history, Alan and his wife went on a tour with local tour guide Liz Spiret and were thrilled to soak up some of the rich history of Ladysmith.
They captured every moment on camera to take back home with them and share it with their family in Plettenberg Bay.
