WATCH: Enraged residents converge on municipal building

"Where is the water we are being charged for?" exclaimed one resident, who explained that he had been charged for water and water availability, despite the fact that the AbaQulusi region's taps have been dry since early May.

ANGRY Bhekuzulu residents converged on AbaQulusi Municipality this morning to voice their dissatisfaction with the current lack of service delivery.

“Where is the water we are being charged for?” exclaimed one resident, who explained that he had been charged for water and water availability, despite the fact that the AbaQulusi region’s taps have been dry since early May.

The protesters made their way from Bhekuzulu to the main municipal building in Mark Street, where they demanded to speak to the Acting Municipal Manager, AB Mnikathi about their complaints and hand over their memorandum.

According to municipal staff, Mnikathi was unable to comply with the protesters’ demands as she was out of town due to a court appearance, but instructions were given to municipal official, Kumarin Naicker to countersign the memorandum, along with Mnikathi’s PA, Anaisha Brecher and another municipal official. The memorandum will then be handed to Mnikathi on Monday for perusal.

Police were present at the entrance to the premises when the protesters arrived and managed to keep them at bay while Naicker addressed the matter.

“We want Mnikathi to come out and speak to us,” declared one disgruntled resident. “If she doesn’t come, you will see this building covered in rubbish,” he added, when informed that Mnikathi was unavailable.
