NEWCASTLE – The scourge of burglaries continues, when another household in Aviary Hill was targeted last Thursday morning.
Wishing to remain anonymous, the homeowner explained she had gone to fetch her daughter from school when the incident occurred.
“I went to fetch my daughter at 10am and when we got home, I opened the gates.”
It was then she saw three men in her yard.
The resident quickly drove into the garage, closed the door and contacted her security provider and police, who rushed to the scene.
In the meantime, the perpetrators fled, but they had managed to break open the security gate at the front door, during their attempt to gain access to the house.
Police investigations continue.
Two motor vehicles are believed to be linked to the perpetrators behind the burglaries.
A black Audi and white box-shaped BMW were spotted in almost all the areas where houses were burgled.
Recently, the white BMW was seen in Hutten Heights.
“It has been seen in the area for about a month now, and there have been numerous burglaries in the suburb,” said a resident, who opted to remain anonymous.
The resident added that a neighbour of hers managed to get a photograph of the vehicle.
“The photo was given to the police, so I don’t know how he hasn’t been tracked down yet,” she added.
As residents fear for their safety, Lizzy Arumugam of SAPS Corporate Communications said police were keeping a watchful eye over the suburbs.
“Police are patrolling the affected areas and arresting identified suspects,” she claimed.
However, she could not confirm how many suspects have been arrested, nor could she supply any statistics regarding the number of burglaries in Newcastle over the past month.
“Statistics are released on a yearly basis by the national office,” she said.
