Water tanks stolen in the night

AS THE drought tightens its grips around Vryheid it seems that criminals have seen yet another opportunity.
Residents who collected their water at the Jojo tank in Jan Moolman Street (at the industrial area) woke up to a very unpleasant surprise on Wednesday morning, when the tank at their water collection point went missing.
Melusi Qwabe, a resident who was completely appalled by the matter took to social media on Wednesday morning to notify locals that if anyone was spotted selling the 5000 litre tank, the police should be notified immediately.
The matter was shocking and somewhat saddening for many residents who remarked on how selfish this act of stealing from the public, especially in a time like this, was.
As if that was not enough, later that same week another tank went missing, this time at Bhekuzulu Ext. 16 (Sasko).
This tank, which was situated at a creche in the area is suspected to have been stolen during the night as residents who went to fetch water in the morning were met with muddy sand indicating where the contents of the tank had been emptied.
In both cases no one has come forward to report having seen the tanks being shipped away.
Two cases of theft have been opened at the Vryheid police station and anyone who may know something that might lead to the arrest of these ‘tank-nappers’.
