NEWCASTLE – ward candidate, Thembi Mbongo, was shot and killed in front of her husband and their two children at their home in Blaauwbosch last night.
Speculation is rife that the tragedy was politically related, as she was the ANC’s candidate for Ward 6, Blaauwbosch.
Muzi Ntshangazi, spokesperson for the ANC, expressed great heartache at the senseless tragedy.
“We as the ANC are saddened and shocked by her sudden death.”
Despite being perturbed by the murder, Mr Ntshangazi said he had the utmost confidence in the abilities of police.
“I believe the police will locate the two perpetrators and bring them to book.”
An unofficial police source confirmed an investigation had been launched.
As the local Government Elections draw nearer, Mr Ntshangazi encouraged people to show tolerance and refrain from violence.
“We will have to follow up with the IEC to determine what the procedures are in instances such as this, but it is important people from all walks of life show tolerance towards each other during this time,” he said.
