UPDATE: Thembi Mbongo’s husband relives night of her horrific murder

Siphosakhe Zulu is horrified after his wife was shot in cold blood.

OSIZWENI – The tragic death of Thembi Mbongo, ANC ward candidate for Ward 6, Blaauwbosch, has left her family reeling in shock.

Mbongo was shot and killed in front of her husband and their two children at their home in Blaauwbosch on Saturday night.

Mbongo’s husband, Siphosakhe Zulu, said the incident took place shortly after 7pm, while Mbongo was preparing supper.

“I was watching TV with our children, when I heard a knock on the door,” he recalled.

When he opened the door, Mr Zulu was met by a man who requested to speak with Mbongo.

“As she came out to see who wanted to speak to her, another man walked into the house.”

The second man shot Mbongo four times; once between the eyes and three times into her body.

“I tried fighting the men, hoping I could restrain them until the police arrived.”

However, during the scuffle two more gun shots were fired, and the men managed to escape.

Mr Zulu suspects the murder was politically motivated.

He claimed on Youth Day, June 16, a group of women said they did not want Mbongo to be a ward councillor, but added she had not received any subsequent death threats.

Even though he is now fearful for the lives of himself and his two children, Mr Zulu is urging anyone with information to come fowrard.

“Thembi was a strong and independent woman; she will be missed.”
