Brutal R34 crash claims one life

A BRUTAL head on collision in the early hours of Saturday morning claimed the life of one person on the R34 Melmoth road.

KwaZulu Private Ambulance responded to the scene of the tragedy, where two people sustained serious injuries and another two, moderate injuries, while the driver of one of the vehicles is believed to have died on impact.

The tremendous force of the impact launched one of the vehicles into the air, after which it came to rest, dangerously hanging on the crash barrier at the Emondlo T-junction on the Melmoth road.

Paramedics on the scene had to use hand tools to extricate the driver.
Matters were further complicated by the precarious position and instability of the car. Breakdown operators from JVS and BeeLine Towing assisted, using cables from their vehicles to stabilise the vehicle enough for the medics to carry out their duties.

The patient was safely removed from the vehicle and transported to Vryheid Provincial Hospital.
He was later transferred to Madadeni Hospital for specialist care due to the severe extent of the injuries to both legs.
