Debut Oval Track White-wash
"Nothing delighted me more than mashing my foot on the gas."
Almost 48 hours after his spectacular debut win, Oval Track racer Kevin White was still visibly bursting at the seams with excitement.
No stranger to speed, 32-year-old Kevin’s taste for an adrenaline rush was nurtured from a young age.
From riding motorcycles, to participating in occasional bundu-bashing on quad-bikes, racing seemed like a normal childhood occupation to him.
“Nothing delighted me more than mashing my foot on the gas all the way into the corner and speeding around that track. The adrenaline rush was truly exhilarating,” he explained.

Kevin said he was coerced into buying an oval track car by a friend, who challenged him to purchase a car if he bought one too. Not one to back down from a challenge, Kevin decided to put his money where his mouth was, and bought a vehicle to compete in the 1600s class category.
“I researched online to find out the rules of oval track racing, and learned how the flagging system worked only days before the event took place.”
With his seemingly initial scant knowledge of the rules of engagement, and a verbal crash-course in cornering from a fellow female oval-track driver, Kevin learned enough to debut his racing car at the event on July 9.
When asked how he justified his purchase of an oval track racing car, Kevin simply said,
“My cellphone was stolen recently and then I found out how much it would cost to replace it. I was flabbergasted at the price. I’m very happy I spent the money buying a racing car for the oval track, instead of wasting my money on a fancy new cell phone. Besides, I derived greater pleasure from this car than I ever got from a smartphone.”
When he’s not behind a steering wheel of a race car, Kevin keeps himself busy by running his engineering business.
“I keep in shape by attending gym, and I also participate in the annual Warrior Race in Ballito,” he said. “I was 23 when my dad passed away and left me to run the business. I was studying towards an engineering degree at the time this happened. Fortunately, my dad’s business partner was there to help me gain the experience I needed to run the business successfully.”
Kevin’s dream is to see more people in Newcastle participating in this sport.
“It’s so easy to find a car like this in this town. You just need to ask around, and it’s not as expensive as one might think. The club fees are so affordable too.”
Kevin advises motoring enthusiasts to keep an eye on him in the future.
“You will definitely see me participate in next month’s oval track races. Although the crowd turnout was great over the weekend, I would love to see more support from residents, even if it’s just to watch and show support. It is a great night out with family and friends.”
Good luck Kevin, we will definitely be watching!
