Minthra helps the blood flow for 40 years

Minthra was born and raised in Ladysmith, and has always been passionate about helping others

Minthra Omapershad has been serving the community of Ladysmith in an incredibly important role for the last 40 years.

If you are a blood donor, then you will know that she is a dedicated and helpful employee of the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) and you can find her at the Ladysmith Blood Donor Clinic, San Marco Centre, hoping you come in to donate life-saving blood.

As you walk through the doors of the local blood bank, you will instantly be greeted by her friendly smile that makes you feel right at home.

This is just what you need, as no one likes the thought of a needle being stuck into their arm!

Minthra was born and raised in Ladysmith, and has always been passionate about helping others.

Hence, what better job to choose than one that saves people’s lives… And this is exactly what she does, with the help of all the regular and new donors. “I am always determined to get people to come along and donate blood. The success of what we do depends on the public, so we need people to be ‘heroes’ who selflessly give of their precious blood to save someone they have possibly never seen before,” she says.

Happily married with four children, Minthra started doing volunteer work at the blood bank after she matriculated.

Her position at the blood bank soon became permanent as a Blood Donor Attendant.

She loves her job, especially being able to interact with different types of people on a daily basis, and finds it rewarding to know that every pint of blood will save someone’s life. Starting work at the blood bank in January 1976, she is still not tired of it. Her hobbies outside work include going to the temple and spending time with family.

“Sometimes I don’t have a social life because I love working so much. I’ve also been a student at the Bhagavid Gita for three years now and I’m still doing classes,” explains Minthra. “I am blessed with an awesome, loving family at home and at my workplace,” she adds with a smile.
