The woman recently killed in the ongoing taxi war is believed to have literally been in the wrong place at the wrong time, ie driving a family member’s car.

38-year-old Lathiwe Lindiwe Mabaso was killed in a drive-by shooting on Sunday afternoon in the Mcitsheni area.

It is believed that Lathiwe had swapped cars with a family member for the day.

The shooter/s repeatedly fired on the vehicle, apparently without making certain the driver was the actual target.

Four people travelling in the vehicle were shot at. The female driver was killed instantly, while the other three occupants were injured and transported to hospital.

Lathiwe Mabaso is believed to be linked to the Mabaso clan. She was believed to be the first female killed in the taxi war between the two clans. This would have marked a dramatic change, as females have previously never been targeted in the ongoing taxi war to date. The fact that this was a mistake, however, did not stop retaliation from the Mabaso clan coming swift and fast.

The brutal and bloody shooting at point-blank range of a Gamede clan member on Tuesday is evidence of this.

Police spokesperson Captain Charmaine Struwig confirmed that the case has been handed over to the Hawks.

The recent taxi war between the Mabaso and Gamede clans and the killing of members of the Klipriver Taxi Association has forced taxi association members to go into hiding in fear for their lives.

It is also believed that the Klipriver Taxi Association itself is involved in a struggle for survival with a rival taxi association.
