While official results seem to filter through at a snail’s pace in the IEC, the Ladysmith Gazette however can confirm the DA have won Ward 12 and the ANC look almost certain to have won Ward 20.

Ward 20 made national headlines when ANC ward candidate Khanyisile Ngobese-Sibisi was brutally killed in a deadly ambush on Nelson Mandela Day (July 18).

ANC supporters could be seen carrying her placards around. Previously Ward 20 was a marginal DA Ward.

It is interesting to note that any ward candidate on the party list – even if they are killed before the elections, but win in the votes – still get elected to office, thus forcing a by-election to be held at a later stage. So by effectively voting for a dead person, voters ensured everyone gets a second crack at winning Ward 20.
