Isckon pays tribute to Lord Krishna

NEWCASTLE – International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskcon), Newcastle, held its annual Sri Krishna, celebrating the appearance of Lord Krishna, on August 25 at the Iskcon Centre.

Dressed to the nines, humble devotees gathered at the centre with offerings of fruit and milk to join the auspicious occasion.

Iskcon organising member, Mahasringa Das said the day was similar to Christmas within the Hindu community, and the celebration consisted of dancing, music, and children re-enacting drama plays of Lord Krishna’s legendary stories.

“This is a global festival. They key aspect of the evening is to celebrate and give thanks for the birth of Lord Krishna, and to commemorate his grace upon us.”

While giving the offerings, devotees cheered and chanted Lord Krishna’s name. Mahasringa Das said devotees had brought around 108 food offerings as a sign of good faith.

Guest speaker of the evening, senior spiritual leader of Iskcon, Bhaki Narasimha Swami said he had been travelling to and attending celebrations, conducting seminars at various Iskcon centres around the globe. He ended his journey in Newcastle.

Mahasringa Das said, along with all the festivities Iskcon would be hosting throughout the year, they were looking forward to celebrating Iskcon’s 50th birthday.

“Our first Iskcon centre was founded by a spiritual leader named, A.C Bhaktivwntha Swami Srila Prabhupada in 2nd Avenue, New York. Over the past 50 years, we have spread out and have opened centres right across the world. We are looking forward to celebrating this milestone birthday,” he concluded.
